Saint Nicholas Day

Thursday after school, the kids and I were sitting at the table like we always do. Reese was working on homework and Cru and Evee were eating a snack, and out of the blue, Cru started talking about when he goes to school tomorrow (meaning Friday), there would be a "candyCAN" in his shoe.

I immediately think, "Oh crap, I forgot Saint Nicholas Day again!"  I forget every year.

Reese spoke up and said, "For St. Nicholas Day!"

Me: You're right, Reese. We can't forget to put our shoes out tonight, and if you've been good, he'll leave you a special treat....but if you've been naughty, you get coal!

Reese and Cru: What's coal???

Then Reese interrupted with JINX!!! Yes, we are at that stage....

Describing what coal is to a 7 and 4 year old is not easy!

Me: Well, it's something you put in a grill to light the fire and they look like black rocks.

They didn't ask anymore questions....I think they just knew they didn't want that! 

Fast forward to supper time, Cru was actually eating his supper to prove he is a good boy....he'll do just about anything for a special treat :)  So, the kids were all telling Chet about St. Nick coming, then I said, "Cru, what do you get if you're naughty?"

"A GRILL!"

I'm taking that as a sign that he was actually listening!

And when they awoke this morning....
